겁이 났다.
그렇지만 계단을 내려가 보기로 한다.
계단은 열 개.
하나씩, 하나씩 내려가 문을 밀었다.
아 맞다—열쇠를 잊었네. 주머니에서 열쇠를 꺼냈다.
무거운 문. 다시 열쇠로 열고나서 밀었다.
어두운 복도가 보인다.
문들이 양쪽으로 쭉 늘어서 있다. 천 개쯤 될까?
어떤 문으로 가볼까.
처음이니까, 기왕이면 괜찮은 생(生)으로 가보고 싶다.
하지만 마음이 급했다.
빨리 보고 끝내고 싶었던 것일까.
조금 천천히 해보자고 생각을 고쳐본다.
문득 두려움도 스쳤다. ‘깨어나지 못하면?’
괜찮아. 중간에 눈 떠도 돼. 다시 시작하면 되니까.
996. 문에 번호가 적혀있다.
가까이 있는 문을 열었다.
어둡다. 바닥엔 시커먼 물이 찰랑거린다.
책을 좋아하는 소녀의 뒷모습. 다른 풍경은 보이지 않는다.
느껴진다. 어둡다는 것을.
깊고 슬프다는 것을.
좋은 생을 기대했는데.

마음속으로 물으며 그와 함께 계단을 올라갔다.

She closes the door. When she comes out to the corridor, he was waiting. Her husband. Seonbi-ssi. ‘Was it okay for Seonbi-ssi to come into my experience together?’ she wonders in her heart as she climbs the stairs with him.
A thousand doors. One of them. The girl behind Door 996 will still be there. In the darkness. Where water ripples. With her books.
